O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

Showing On: Netflix

Genre: Comedy, Music, Adventure

Haven’t really written much about anything I’ve seen recently, because not much I’ve been watching has really been worth writing about. But I saw this and thought it looked half decent. Turns out it was one of the best things I’ve watched in a while! Its set in the 1930’s, 3 guys break out of a prison camp and go off on their adventure! I guess I may have a soft spot for it as it was set in the 30’s. I like their accents, their basic clothes, their way of life and te god damn awesome music that is played frequently throughout. The music actually made me feel pretty happy! But it is very funny at parts and all the characters are equally as great, definitely watch if you’re looking through Netflix trying to find something. Now I’m just going to see of I can download the soundtrack for this film..

Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)Showing On: Netflix
Genre: Drama, Comedy
Never heard of this one & if i’m being totally honest with myself the only reason we sat down to watch it was because Netflix put it under the catagory of gay and lesbian! The only possible reason they could have done that is because one of the main characters, Idgie, was probably a secret lesbian. In the film it switches between an old lady telling stories to a visitor at the retirement home, and these stories shes actually talking about set in a 1920’s Alabama. A good amount of humour but also pretty sad at points. Definitely made my girlfriend cry a little. After looking it up, the film was also nominated for a couple of Oscars, one being for Kathy Bates’s role.

Dan In Real Life (2007)
Showing on : LoveFilm
Genre: Comedy, Romance Watched this because I realized that I haven’t watched anything lighthearted in the last few weeks, and after gone baby gone I didn’t fancy anything else so serious. It was an averagely good comedy. There were a few parts that made me laugh, but I guess it takes a lot for a Rom-Com to totally impress me. Its about Dan, being a widowed man with 3 children. They go away for a family holiday and Dan meets a woman for the first time since his wife passed, but obviously, it’s a bit more complicated than that.. Was still worth my time though, and I really do wish I had a massive family like in the film.

Good Will Hunting (1997)
Showing on: Netflix
Genre: Drama
I have no idea why I have never seen this film before. Always seeing quotes and screen caps of it all over tumblr so I don’t know why the hell I just scrolled past it all. I also had no idea that Matt Damon is as old as he is, and has been making films for pretty long time! He also co wrote this with Ben Affleck as well, so respect to them both. It has an awesome plot, where a teacher discovers that the college janitor has an amazing skill when it comes to math. However this kid is pretty messed up, so Robin Williams comes along as a psychiatrist trying to help him and not let all his talents be wasted. Please watch this if you have not already and have a netlfix subscription, it was worth the whole £6 i spent this month on the subscription.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)
Showing on: Netflix
Genre: Crime, Drama
Read the description and thought it’d give it a go. Basically the films about a missing child, and a pair of private detectives who join the hunt to find the girl. The film seemed to go from twist to twist and spread through pretty much every main character who had be introduced to us in the first few scenes! Although now I feel a little depressed by the whole film in general, it was a good watch. That may be because I have a younger sister so I can empathize more with the pain of the characters, or just because it was a pretty decent film. It was directed by Ben Affleck and the main character Patrick was played by his brother, Casey. Morgan Freeman is it in also. I mean, the mans a legend right?

Hard Candy (2005)
Showing on: Netflix
Genre: Thriller, Drama
I remember watching this film when it came out but really couldn’t remember what happened. It’s a about a 14 year old girl, Hayley Stark (Ellen Page) who gets talking to a 30 year old man on a chat room. Things progress and there’s a nice little twist at the end which is always fun. Wasn’t really sure where it was going at one point but it was pretty decent in the end. I always find it interesting enough watching young actors/actress’s though. Especially someone like Ellen Page who keeps going on to do bigger and better things.

The Pianist (2002)
Showing on: Lovefilm
Genre: Drama, History, War
Watched this one in school and thought I’d give it a second watch. If you haven’t already seen or heard of this it’s definitely one worth watching. I may be a bit of a sucker for holocaust films, but I’d find it hard to believe that no one else finds it as interesting as I do. It’s based on a true story (which after doing some research is fairly accurate) about a polish Jewish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody) during WW2. It follows him throughout his struggles and on top of that is a brilliantly made film. In my eyes it’s a must watch if you have some time on your hands and lovefilm at your disposal..

Sarah’s Key (2010)
Showing on: Lovefilm
Genre: Drama, WarI’m going to start by saying that I’m not actually sure if I’m naive to not to have been aware of the ‘Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup’, but I had never heard of it before. Basically this film switches between showing the life of a girl named Sarah in 1942 during this roundup in Paris during the holocaust, and the life of an American/French journalist in modern day life who is writing an article about the tragedy and at the same time finding a connection between her own family and Sarah. I really enjoyed this film, which to be perfectly honest had never actually heard of. Not only did I enjoy it but I learnt a few things from it as well!

Half Nelson (2006)
Showing on: Lovefilm Instant
Genre: DramaThis film is one that I’ve contemplated watching in the past but never actually got round to seeing. It’s about a junior city high teacher in New York who lives his life as a junkie and finds his motivation for life through the class of students he teaches. I did enjoy watching this film, it’s not one I would run to see anytime soon but I do not regret watching it and i guess you could say that I found it to be slightly inspirational.. to a point. Not to mention the fact that Ryan Gosling is an incredibly good actor who plays his character remarkably well. On a side note, if you were not already aware, Ryan Gosling sings in a band called Dead man’s bones. They’re actually pretty good.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEvF7qUf2Pc
